Lympstone Nursery

East Devon Architects, Hilton Barnfield have created a delicate and contextual development. The scheme provides ten quality contemporary homes in the heart of a quintessential Devon village.

A project situated in the heart of the Village of Lympstone in East Devon. Hilton Barnfield Architects identified the opportunity to create a new Village Green as a focal point in front of the Church with carefully considered small scale housing framing the new public space. Inspired by the historic character of the village the scheme creates a vibrant neighbourhood: achieved by marrying good urban and architectural design to create passive surveillance, accidental interactions, and local identity.

Hilton Barnfield Architects worked alongside Urban Designer DHUD for the project. The team undertook extensive public consultation in order to respond to local feedback and gain support for the proposed development. Consultation with Lympstone Parish Council, the Church, East Devon Planning, Historic England and the local community helped the Architects to develop a scheme that would be supported by all parties.

The development occupies a sensitive site in the Lympstone Conservation Area and in the setting of the Listed Church. The design had to be sensitive to the historic fabric of the village whilst creating a contemporary aesthetic. As well as new housing and the Village Green the scheme also provides

  • occasional parking for the Church;
  • a wild meadow area;
  • and a sustainable drainage strategy responding to local flooding issues.

Working alongside local developers RBL Homes the scheme delivers a development that responds to and enhances the character of the village. Providing high quality, well designed and built family homes.
